Newton Cape Addition

  • City: Newton, Massachusetts
  • Notes:

We see this type of request often in Boston. The ubiquitous cape style homes built in the residential developments of the 20’ and 30’s were typically small, economical, single-story homes. In the following decades owners often expanded their living space into the attics of these homes, carving out small bedrooms and possibly a bathroom under the eaves of the roof. As the needs of families have grown with modern standards we are asked to conceive of ways to expand on the house in a way that is in keeping with the scale of the original cape. For this project we added a great room to the rear of the house. By reorganizing the area surrounding the second floor staircase landing, and a space formerly a small bathroom, we were able to add a new larger children’s bathroom and a master en-suite above the great room. From the street the addition goes nearly unnoticed. By including new corner windows to the great room we are able to open the living room to the wooded rear yard.
