Brushhill Residence

  • City: Newton, Massachusetts
  • Notes:

This is a classic 1920’s brick center stair colonial that we see so much of.  At some time in the past it underwent poorly planned additions including an attached garage that largely bisected the house and relegated the kitchen to a small wing to one side.

Our intervention converted the garage space into a new kitchen and living room that is central to the house, a new hallway traverses the house connecting old and new spaces from a new mudroom entry on one side, kitchen, den, family room and first floor master suite on the other.

We built a new detached garage that frames a paved court for outdoor family activities.  We took advantage of the sloping site to embed the garage on the hillside and provide access on two levels.

We also carved out a new patio and fire pit area so that the family can now access the rear yard directly from the new family room and kitchen.
